What to look for when buying Indian clothes
Before you buy, keep four things in mind:
- Fabric quality. Real silk, georgette, chiffon and cotton drape and last far better than cheap synthetics. Ask about the material, especially for bridal and party wear.
- Craftsmanship. Hand embroidery, zardozi, mirror work and quality finishing are what separate a memorable outfit from a throwaway one.
- Sizing and fit. Indian sizing differs from Dutch/EU sizing, and many garments are semi-stitched or made-to-measure meant to be finished to your body. More on this below.
- The occasion. A daytime puja, a festive party and a wedding reception all call for different levels of formality, fabric and colour.

- Ordering directly from abroad. Cheapest on paper, but you carry the risk of sizing, quality, customs and long delivery times.

Sizing, alterations and made-to-measure
This is where many first-time buyers get caught out. Many Indian garments especially lehengas and womenswear are semi-stitched: the piece is almost finished and only needs to be tailored to your exact measurements. Look for the “Made to measure / Op maat maken” label on the product.
