Buying Indian Clothing in the Netherlands

Looking for authentic Indian clothing in the Netherlands but not sure where to start? Whether you need a saree for a wedding, a sherwani for a reception, or a simple kurti for Diwali, this guide explains what to look for, how sizing and tailoring work, and where to shop, both in store and online.

At Jay’s Indian Fashion we have dressed families across the Netherlands for more than 13 years from our boutique in The Hague, so we have gathered everything a first-time (or returning) buyer needs to know.

Why Indian clothing is more popular than ever in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has a large and growing South-Asian community, and Indian fashion has crossed well beyond it. Bollywood, Indian weddings, Diwali, Eid and Raksha Bandhan celebrations all drive demand for beautiful, occasion-ready outfits. More Dutch shoppers are also discovering Indian craftsmanship, hand embroidery, mirror work and Banarasi silk, as statement pieces for parties and events.

The challenge is that authentic, well-made Indian clothing can be hard to find locally, and ordering blindly from overseas often means sizing surprises and long waits. That is exactly the gap a specialist boutique fills.

What to look for when buying Indian clothes

Before you buy, keep four things in mind:

  • Fabric quality. Real silk, georgette, chiffon and cotton drape and last far better than cheap synthetics. Ask about the material, especially for bridal and party wear.
  • Craftsmanship. Hand embroidery, zardozi, mirror work and quality finishing are what separate a memorable outfit from a throwaway one.
  • Sizing and fit. Indian sizing differs from Dutch/EU sizing, and many garments are semi-stitched or made-to-measure meant to be finished to your body. More on this below.
  • The occasion. A daytime puja, a festive party and a wedding reception all call for different levels of formality, fabric and colour.

Where to buy Indian clothing in the Netherlands

You have three realistic options:

  1. A specialist Indian boutique (recommended). You can see and feel the fabric, get sizing and styling advice, and arrange tailoring. Jay’s Indian Fashion has a showroom at Delagoastraat 17, The Hague visits are by appointment, so call first on +31 6 43560890 and we will give you unhurried, personal attention.
  2. A trusted online shop that ships within the Netherlands. Browse the full collection on our webshop, pay securely with iDEAL or credit card, and have your order delivered to your door anywhere in the country. Pickup in The Hague is free.
  3. Ordering directly from abroad. Cheapest on paper, but you carry the risk of sizing, quality, customs and long delivery times.

Customers travel to us from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven and even from Belgium and Germany precisely because a local specialist removes that risk.

Sizing, alterations and made-to-measure

This is where many first-time buyers get caught out. Many Indian garments especially lehengas and womenswear are semi-stitched: the piece is almost finished and only needs to be tailored to your exact measurements. Look for the “Made to measure / Op maat maken” label on the product.

We work with partner tailors and seamstresses so your outfit fits perfectly, and we can arrange custom orders directly from India if you cannot find exactly what you want. Read more on our partners page or just get in touch.
